Pay as you go, monthly contract or sim free phone?

Wondering whether you should opt for a pay as you go mobile phone or a line rental contract? It's interesting to note that the Consumers Association (Which?) recently said that if you spend more than 3 minutes a day on the phone and your monthly call charges are £15 or more, you will usually be better off with a contract phone. The advantage of paying line rental on a contract is that you will often get the phone free and a certain amount of free calls and text messages per month. Contracts are also ideal for those who want to upgrade their phone each year to the latest handset.

However, if you only use your mobile phone very occasionally or just want one so that people can get in touch with you (or for use in emergencies), then you will usually be better off with a pre pay mobile phone purchase. Prepay phones are also a good buy for children and teenagers, to ensure that call costs stay under control!

If you already have a mobile phone contract (a SIM card) and an old ageing handset, but want to get your hands on the latest new technology, or if you have simply lost or broken your current mobile phone - then a SIM free unconnected handset is the solution for you.

All of the mobile phone retailers listed above offer monthly contract phones, while most of them also have a range of 'pay as you go' and sim free mobile phone offers. For example, MobileShop has a choice of sim free and pay as you go phones on their web site and Amazon UK sell a selection of pay as you go mobile phones.
